Arkansas Hotline for Mental Health
With the exception of bipolar disorder, Arkansas’s statewide inpatient stay rates were higher than the national average for the most common mental health illnesses. All five diagnoses were over the 50th percentile for the state, and three diagnoses—schizophrenia, suicidal thoughts/intentional self-harm, and trauma- and stressor-related disorders were inside the 80th percentile. With 63.1 stays per 100,000 people, Arkansas also had the third-highest rate of inpatient stays for intentional self-harm and suicidal attempts in the country.
Arkansas has implemented various initiatives to address mental health needs. These include community mental health centers, crisis hotlines, school-based mental health programs, and efforts to reduce stigma and increase mental health awareness.
Arkansas has historically had higher suicide rates compared to the national average. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in 2019, the suicide rate in Arkansas was 19.6 per 100,000 population, slightly higher than the national average.
Like many states, Arkansas faces challenges in terms of access to mental health care, particularly in rural areas. Some areas may have limited mental health resources and a shortage of mental health professionals, which can impact access to care.
Substance abuse, including alcohol and opioid misuse, is a concern in Arkansas. Substance abuse can often co-occur with mental health issues, and integrated approaches are necessary for comprehensive treatment.
