The substance use disorder epidemic is still becoming worse, as seen by the rates of drug overdose deaths alone. In 2019, the rate of drug overdose deaths jumped seven-fold from 6.7 per 100,000 to 48.4 per 100,000. With an age-adjusted drug overdose mortality rate of 48.4 per 100,000 people in 2019, Delaware has the second-highest drug overdose death rate in the nation. Rates in all three counties are greater than the average.

Delaware has made efforts to improve access to mental health care. The state has community mental health centers, private practitioners, and hospitals that provide a range of mental health services. However, like in other states, access to care can still be a challenge, particularly in rural or underserved areas.

Mental Health Initiatives: Delaware has implemented various mental health initiatives. The Delaware Division of Substance Abuse and Mental Health oversees mental health and substance abuse services in the state. The division focuses on prevention, early intervention, treatment, and recovery services. Delaware also has crisis hotlines and programs targeted at specific populations, such as veterans and youth.

Delaware’s suicide rates have fluctuated over the years but have been generally lower than the national average. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in 2019, the suicide rate in Delaware was 11.4 per 100,000 population, which was slightly lower than the national average.

Substance abuse, including alcohol and drug misuse, is a concern in Delaware, as it is in many other states. The state has implemented programs and initiatives to address substance abuse prevention, treatment, and recovery.
