Georgia’s overall position in terms of access to mental healthcare declined from 36th in 2020 to 37th in 2021. More than 1.4 million Georgians battle one or more mental illnesses. This is equivalent to about 18% of the total population. There are significant suicidal thoughts in 314,000 adults. About 108,000 young people experience at least one major depressive episode each year. A total of 888,000 adults with mental illnesses of any kind did not obtain treatment. Uninsured adults with any form of mental disease number 255,000. More than 526,000 Georgians suffer from an addiction. This is equivalent to 6.7% of the total population. Many people battle both mental illness and drug or alcohol addiction.
Georgia faces challenges in terms of access to mental health care, particularly in rural areas and underserved communities. The state has implemented initiatives to improve access, including telehealth services, school-based mental health programs, and mobile crisis response teams.
Georgia has implemented various mental health initiatives and programs. The Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities (DBHDD) oversees mental health services in the state. Georgia has crisis hotlines, community mental health centers, and programs targeted at specific populations such as veterans, children, and individuals with developmental disabilities.
Georgia’s suicide rates have varied over the years. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in 2019, the suicide rate in Georgia was 13.7 per 100,000 population, which was slightly lower than the national average of 13.9 per 100,000 population.
Substance abuse, including alcohol and drug misuse, is a concern in Georgia, as it is in many other states. The state has implemented programs and initiatives to address substance abuse prevention, treatment, and recovery.
