Hawaii Mental Health Hotline

Mental health issues are a significant concern in Hawaii, as they are in many parts of the world. According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) from 2019, about 20.5% of adults in Hawaii reported experiencing a mental illness in the past year.

Suicide rates in Hawaii have been a particular focus due to their higher-than-average incidence compared to the United States as a whole. In 2019, the suicide rate in Hawaii was 19.1 per 100,000 individuals, compared to the national average of 13.9 per 100,000.

Access to mental health care services, especially in rural and remote areas, can be a challenge in Hawaii. Like many other states, Hawaii faces shortages of mental health professionals, particularly in underserved regions. This can create barriers to timely and adequate mental health care.

Substance abuse is often interconnected with mental health issues. In Hawaii, substance abuse, including alcohol and illicit drugs, has been a significant concern. The NSDUH data from 2019 revealed that around 8.7% of adults in Hawaii reported having a substance use disorder in the past year.

The mental well-being of young people is crucial, and in Hawaii, like elsewhere, it has received attention. In 2019, the Youth Risk Behavior Survey reported that around 29% of high school students in Hawaii felt sad or hopeless for two or more weeks in a row, significantly impacting their daily functioning.
