According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) for 2019, approximately 20% of adults in Ohio reported experiencing a mental illness in the past year. Common mental health conditions include anxiety disorders, major depressive disorder, and substance use disorders.

Suicide is a serious concern related to mental health. In 2019, Ohio had a suicide rate of 15.3 per 100,000 population, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Suicide rates can vary by age group, gender, and other factors.

Ohio has been working to improve access to mental health care services. The state has a network of community mental health centers, private therapists and counselors, and crisis hotlines. Efforts have been made to increase access through telehealth services, particularly in underserved areas. Additionally, Ohio has expanded Medicaid coverage to include mental health services.

Efforts include expanding access to medication-assisted treatment, increasing naloxone distribution, and implementing harm reduction strategies.
