According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) for 2019, approximately 18% of adults in South Carolina reported experiencing a mental illness in the past year. Common mental health conditions include anxiety disorders, major depressive disorder, and substance use disorders.

Suicide is a serious concern related to mental health. In 2019, South Carolina had a suicide rate of 17.9 per 100,000 population, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Suicide rates can vary by age group, gender, and other factors.

South Carolina faces challenges in terms of access to mental health care services, particularly in rural areas. The state has been working to improve access through initiatives such as telehealth services, mobile crisis response teams, and collaborations with primary care providers. Additionally, South Carolina has community mental health centers, private therapists and counselors, and crisis hotlines.
