According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) from 2019, around 18.3% of adults in Wisconsin experienced a mental illness in the past year. Additionally, about 7.3% of adults reported having a major depressive episode in the past year.
In 2019, Wisconsin had a suicide rate of 16.1 per 100,000 population, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The suicide rate can vary year to year and may have changed since then.
The Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) reported that in 2019, about 42.1% of adults with any mental illness in Wisconsin received mental health treatment or counseling. However, this still indicates that a significant portion of individuals may not be receiving the help they need.
The NSDUH also provides data on substance use and mental health. In 2019, around 9.2% of adults in Wisconsin had a substance use disorder, and 3.8% of adults reported both a substance use disorder and a co-occurring mental illness.

Wisconsin State Department of Health Services Mental Health Care and Coverage. Services for mental health concerns are delivered in a variety of settings, including hospitals, clinics, homes, and other community locations. Treatment is effective. Recovery is possible. We supervise Wisconsin’s public mental health system. Wisconsin’s 72 counties are responsible for delivering services and providing for the well-being, treatment, and care of individuals living with mental health concerns. This often is done in partnership with community-based agencies and organizations.
